MINDFUL

  1. Sei im Hier und Jetzt. Konzentriere dich darauf, was in diesem Moment da ist.
An Tagen, an denen dir nichts einfällt, denk einen Schritt weiter: Was hast du gelernt, was ist gelungen?

PROZESS

  1. Lerne dich selbst kennen: Was möchtest du, was brauchst du und was gefällt dir?

Toolkit

Here is my collection of useful tools that I come across here and there and gather along the way.

MINDFUL:

  1. Be in the here and now. Focus on what is here at this moment.
  2. Feel what you feel, give your feelings the space it needs or asks for.
  3. Letting go. Put your situation on a piece of paper and destroy it, or place it on a stone somewhere quiet, or another creative solution that you come up with.
  4. Self acceptance.
  5. Define your thoughts and name them. Visualise them, make them tangible. Try to see your thoughts and look at them from a distance. Send your thoughts on a journey, for instance, putting them on a boat and watch them as they float away.
  6. Allow yourself to lament, not just complain. Real lament brings your pain to God instead of just venting it.
  7. Seek silence, meditation and prayer regularly.
  8. Write down three things you are grateful for every day. On days when nothing comes to mind, look one step further: what did you learn, what went well?
  9. Call the wind by its name. Write down your worries as honestly as you can and pray about them. Once something is spoken out loud, it often loses some of its power.
  10. Check the compass every day: a short Bible passage in the morning before the day begins. Not much, but regularly.

ACTION: (Distraction to change your focus)

  1. Listen to music.
  2. Do physical activities, like a walk in nature.
  3. Go do something meaningful, like working or hobbies, and deeply focus on the task at hand.
  4. Read the Serenity Prayer and take it to heart; it remains a gem. Or read a book of your choosing that soothes and relaxes you.
  5. Be with friends or family and talk about it. Stop keeping it all bottled up and let it out. Talk about it and listen to good advice. They can see your situation from a distance and may see things from another helpful perspective, or at least lighten the burden of your soul a bit.
  6. Actively change your body posture. Smile, sit straight, feet on the ground for stability. Tell your mind through your body that you are in a good place.
  7. Don’t sail alone. Tell someone you trust what’s ahead of you and ask them to pray for you.

PROCESS:

  1. Get to know yourself: what you want, need and like.
  2. Set an important goal as your personal destination.
  3. Trust God and yourself. Know and accept that you are not in control, God is. And when you have found your self-worth and self-esteem in Him, you can trust your steps without losing balance.
  4. Focus and take steps of action. If you are prepared, know your goal, trust in God and yourself, and have found a good balance, it is time to focus on your next step towards your goal.
  5. Know your worth, regardless of what others say about you.
  6. Stay yourself, even when you easily pick up on other people’s moods and adapt.
  7. Practice patience while you wait. Waiting is not the same as standing still.
  8. Ask yourself good questions instead of deciding on impulse.
  9. Get specific. A vague wish doesn’t move a mountain, but writing down exactly what needs to happen, one clear step at a time, does.
  10. Learn to be grateful. Be grateful for the good, whether great or small, for the challenges and the growth that can come from them, and for every difficulty you are spared.
  11. Write down the next step. Not the whole journey, just what’s on the agenda this week: a decision, a conversation, a task.
  12. Ask for wisdom. You don’t have to know everything already.
  13. Reef the sail when things get too much: ask for help, take a break, admit that you can’t do something on your own. That’s not giving up, it’s humility.

CHOICES:

Choose your thoughts deliberately. If you keep spiralling, hold on to positive facts or words that will pull you back into balance. Remember that sometimes your mind seeks trouble just to keep you on your toes, so you remain on edge in case you have to run when danger occurs. Actively fight this with positive thoughts and prayer. Accept that your mind is doing this, but lovingly tell it that it is not necessary and that it is safe to let go. Repeat positive things to yourself.

Repeat some steps until the sticky thoughts finally subside and inner peace is restored.

When you feel powerless, recognise what is actually in your hands, and hand over the rest.

Be careful with high expectations. Between hope and disappointment lies expectation.

Watch your words. What you tell yourself steers you, the way a small rudder steers a large ship. “I’ll never manage this” steers towards discouragement, “I can do this on my own” towards overconfidence, and “God is with me, I’ll take the next step” keeps you on course.

Toolkit

  1. Luister naar muziek.
  2. Doe fysieke activiteiten, zoals wandelen in de natuur.
